How to Get a Website Domain in Ghana

A website domain name is essential for establishing an online presence. Think of it like a street address for your business. It tells people where to find you online and makes it easier for them to remember your brand. It also helps build credibility, gives your business a more professional feel, and makes it easier for customers to navigate to your website without confusion. If you're serious about being found online, owning your own domain is a step you can't skip.

Step 1: Choose a Domain Name with Intention

Before buying a domain, think carefully about the name you want. Choose a domain name that matches your brand or business name closely. Don’t just pick anything because it’s available. Try to keep it short, clean, and easy to pronounce. Avoid using numbers or confusing spellings unless they are part of your brand already.

Also, think about your target audience. Are you focusing on people in Ghana or trying to reach an international audience? If you are targeting Ghana only, go with a .gh or .com.gh domain extension. If you are offering services outside Ghana or want to build a global brand, it's better to go with a .com. This helps your customers connect with your domain better and also makes your brand positioning clearer.

Step 2: Where to Buy Your Domain

If you are buying a .com, you can go with international domain providers like:

These platforms are fast, easy to use, and allow you to register and manage your domain from anywhere. They also give you full control over your domain settings.

If you want a .gh domain or would rather pay using local methods like Mobile Money (MoMo), Telecel Cash, or even Vodafone Cash, you can use a Ghana-based provider. A few options include:

Buying locally is more convenient for many people in Ghana because you don’t need an international card or PayPal account. You can pay easily using MoMo and get help in case of any issues. However, keep in mind that .gh domains usually cost more than .com and might require extra verification like your business registration certificate or a national ID. So, be ready for a slightly longer process if you're going the .gh route.

Step 3: Make Sure You Own the Domain

When buying your domain, it’s very important to register it under your name or your company’s name. The email used during registration is the one that has full ownership of the domain. Don’t let a developer or someone else register it using their personal email because if anything goes wrong later, you could lose access to the domain completely.

Even if someone is buying it for you, ask them to register it under your email and send you the login details after the purchase is done. This way, you’ll always have full control over it no matter what happens.

Step 4: Keep the Domain Short and On-Brand

When choosing the actual name, try to use the shortest version of your business name that still makes sense. For example, if your business is called Acme Holdings Ghana Limited, try to go for something like acmeholdings.com or acme.com.gh. Avoid adding unnecessary words unless your name is already taken. Shorter domains are easier to type, more trustworthy, and look better on business cards or social media.

It’s also okay to register more than one version if you want to protect your brand, like both acme.com and acme.com.gh, and redirect one to the other.

Step 5: Don’t Forget to Renew Your Domain

Most domains are bought for a one-year period. After that, you’ll need to renew them manually or set them to auto-renew if your provider allows. If you forget to renew it, the domain could expire and someone else might register it.

To avoid this, add a reminder to your calendar a few weeks before the renewal date. Losing a domain you’ve already built a brand around can be very frustrating, so it’s better to stay ahead.

Step 6: Set Up a Business Email for Free

Once your domain is active, you can create a professional business email using your domain. Instead of using Gmail or Yahoo, you can have something like info@acme.com or hello@acme.com.gh. You can use a free service like Zoho Mail to set this up without paying for hosting. It adds more trust and gives your business a cleaner look.
